Pond - in March

Pond

Spring is coming - apparently - and the pond can now be seen coming back to life.

On March 11th we gave it a good overhaul before the frogs got down to business and the plants started growing back. This entailed:

  • Giving the grasses a good pruning back
  • Getting the elodea out, cleaning it and replanting with lead weights
  • Cleaning the pump and filter
  • Doing a partial refresh of the water (to get rid of the muck we'd stirred up)
  • Separating amorous frogs from disconcerted fish
  • A week later the pump was clogged up and needed another clean (the fitting of an outdoor switch has made this process much easier), but even with the reduced flow the water was pretty much gin clear. Regrettably, our ministrations seem to have resulted in the frogs spurning the pond in favour of the drainage ditch at the end of the garden - though we're still hopeful they may still spawn in the pond.

With the clear water Rachel counted 33 goldfish, plus one little black fish of unknown species.
